Why certification matters now

A new Norwegian energy labelling scheme applies from 1 January 2026, with changed calculation rules. Existing certificates stay valid under the rules they were issued under, for up to ten years, unless the building changes substantially. The 2026 method change does not by itself create a new obligation to certify. A renewed certificate is calculated with the new method, and in some cases that alone produces a different energy grade with no physical work done to the building.
